Jomson, The Next Exotic Location

Updated: Aug 20

The end of last year 2020 was quite a highlight for Nepal, as the country was promoted on an international platform, with Santosh Shah on MasterChef Professional 2020 and the remake of Black Narcissus mini series (that features Jomsom ), both on BBC .

These two shows have definitely, peaked an interest in Nepal for its cuisine, culture and scenic beauty of the country.

Black Narcissus began on BBC on December 27, 2020.

The series is set in Mopu, a village high up in the Himalayan Mountains, a fictional colonial Himalayan region. The great thing about the new BBC adaptation, was that it was actually shot on location in Nepal, unlike the original 1946 movie, which was all filmed on a UK set using elaborate painted backdrops.

The BBC remake cast and crew went to Jomsom, a village at an altitude of about 2,700 meters in the Annapurna mountains of Nepal. With awesome views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, the landscape was, for many, the star of the show. At the base of the peaks of Mount Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri, Jomsom is located, a beautiful town in Mustang.

The cast (like most visitors today) flew to Kathmandu, took an onward flight to Pokhara in a Twin Otter, then another to the tiny airport in Mustang Province to reach Jomsom. Nothing like the treacherous journey the nuns took as above.

Jomsom is also known as a gateway to the forbidden Kingdom of Lomanthang in Upper Mustang. Trek or vehicle trip to the Kingdom of Lo and Mustang region begins here. Up until 1992, Lomanthang remained limited to foreigners. Mustang soon became a destination of choice for local and foreign trekkers after the culturally and naturally bestowed region opened its doors to the world.

Each year, thousands of adventurous visitors, are attracted to the mesmerizing natural beauty, alpine desert-like scenery, and to the different Thakali, Lopa, Gurung, Magar, Tibetan, and a mix of Hindu and Buddhist culture. The town is part of the foothill treks of the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna. It links with the Dhawalagiri Circuit and Upper Dolpo . Located at an altitude of 2740 meters above sea level within Annapurna Conservation Area, Jomsom has plenty of attractions to be a destination on its own.
